This Friday in Fort Worth!  A must see! Artspace111 announces Now and Them, a solo show featuring the paintings of John Hartley. The exhibition will open Friday, October 18, 2013 from 5:00-8:30 p.m. and will run through November 30, 2013. Enjoy beer and wine by Ben E Keith. Drawing from his own childhood, Hartley collects once-treasured toys that have seen better days. He then paints these childhood relics on a grand scale full of action, color and emotional weight. Racecars are prepared to zip off the surface at any moment. Toy soldiers are scattered across canvases, referencing the tense battle scenes of modern warfare. A singular light source and blurred figures and shapes create a photographic realism in Hartley's paintings. His recent paintings demonstrate a deeper exploration into composition and into the interaction between his subject matter.   "Toy soldiers - whether plastic or lead - symbolize to me a popular fascination with the hero and violence. Well-worn lead soldiers and mutilated plastic army men provide layers of meaning. The chips and dings are proof of some child's vigorous play, but they also symbolize the very real battle scars brought home by war veterans." -John Hartley      image: John Hartley, Battlefield Scrimmage, 2013, oil on canvas,   30 x 40"  The Ohio native received a BFA in 1986 and a MFA in 2004, both from Texas Christian University. He is currently the director of Gallery 414 in Fort Worth and an associate professor of painting at Tarrant County College Northwest Campus. He has been featured in exhibitions  across the state and is in the collections of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Edison State College in Piqua, Ohio.

5 Pointz is coming down, as city approves special permit

It’s official: The 5 Pointz graffiti icon will be coming down.

The application put forward by G&M Realty to demolish the site and erect 1,000 apartment units–370 more units than what is permitted under current zoning rules—was approved by the New York City Council this afternoon.

The council’s decision to approve the special zoning permit was influenced by an agreement struck between Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer and the owners of G&M Realty, Jerry and David Wolkoff.

The Wolkoffs pledged to build and staff the buildings with union workers. Furthermore, they agreed to include 210 affordable apartment units—with a preference for local residents.

With the special zoning permit, the Wolkoffs are now able to develop two residential towers, one 47 stories high and the other 41 stories. They expect to demolish the graffiti mecca by the end of the year—and complete one of the towers by 2015.

The initial plan filed by G&M Realty in April did not include any affordable units. However, the Wolkoffs agreed to provide 75 affordable units following a meeting with Community Board 2 leaders in July—after the board rejected the plan.

The Wolkoffs entered into an agreement with Van Bramer last week to raise the number of affordable units to 210.

5 Pointz development

Wolkoff has agreed to build about 20 artists studios—up from the five that he initially proposed when he filed his plan in April. The amount of studio and gallery space equates to about 12,000 square feet. This space is expected to be available to local residents at reasonable rates.

The developers have also agreed to offer the 5 Pointz graffiti group the opportunity to curate the nearly 10,000 square feet of art panels & walls in the building.

“The concessions provided under the compromise [with G&M Realty] will give Western Queens residents as well as artists a wide variety of interactive amenities future generations will benefit from,” Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer said in a statement.

The development will include a public park that is over 32,000 square feet, 50,000 square feet of retail space and a 250 space public parking garage.

In case you missed the premier of the zine at the Urban Legends show in Dallas, you may still get your copy by purchasing from our online store for just 7.00 and 3.00 shipping.

The purpose of the Appetizine is to promote Texas artists by offering an inexpensive article for sell to those wishing to collect local art as well as specific artists work.  I don't know of any artists prints selling for $7.00 or less.  In each issue you will get 5-6 artist limited prints basically.  The zines retail for little more than what it costs to have them made.  The zines will be full color (except when we have a black and white edition) and will promote 5-6 artists per issue.  Each artist has a two page spread.  Each issue will be limited to 100 pieces.  The first 25 issues will (hopefully) be signed by the artists, each zine will be hand numbered.  We expect to produce a new issue every other month!

If you are an artist living and working in Texas and want to be considered to be in an issue of Appetizine, please send us an email at nick@art-hunger.com.  You may be a fine artist, a poet, writer, musician, etc. You must submit original work to be considered.   Each artist's work will go untouched and uncensored as it is sent to the printers.  The files you submit must be a jpg file 300 dpi, cmyk.  You will have a left and right page file.  Each file must be 5.5" wide by 8.5" tall with a 1/8" cut line.  If you do not work in adobe to make such a file, please hand craft a submission on thick stock paper and send it (unfolded) with a letter of intent to be considered for the Appetizine to:
